WEST HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -
The Veterans Administrations' Inspector General's Office has cited the VA Connecticut Healthcare System hospital for an array of problems including unsanitary operating room conditions and high worker absenteeism.
The agency issued an inspection report of the West Haven hospital Tuesday, after at least one unannounced visit.
Officials say there were poor cleaning procedures for the operating room and they found equipment from surgeries the day before left on the floor and the trash not emptied.
The report says the hospital didn't have enough cleaning staff, and 19 percent of the cleaning staff is absent on an average workday.
The West Haven VA released a statement saying many of the problems were corrected before inspectors left the hospital and it will continue making improvements at the center.
